Earning Emirates Skywards Miles in Australia
Collecting Emirates Skywards Miles will appeal to any Australians travelling regularly on Emirates services to New Zealand, the Middle East, Europe and beyond that aren't crediting their flights to Qantas Frequent Flyer.
There are many ways for Australians to earn Emirates Skywards Miles with their everyday spend.
The most obvious way of earning miles is through spending the long and hard yards in long haul travel with Emirates. Unfortunately, if you're travelling on discount economy fares it could take quite some time to develop a healthy points balance for Business Class redemptions. The number of miles earned per trip varies depending on the type of fare purchased. For example, a one way discount Economy fare from Brisbane to London will yield only 7,700 Emirates Skywards Miles. A one way Business Class redemption on the same route costs 176,000 Skywards Miles, meaning you'll have to take 23 one way trips in Economy to reach the redemption. Yikes!
As codeshare partners, Emirates Skywards Miles can also be earned on Qantas flights.
Emirates Citi World Mastercard
The quickest way to earn airline points is generally through credit card sign up bonuses. With Emirates Skywards Miles, it's no exception. The Emirates Citi World Mastercard is currently offering up to 50,000 Emirates Skywards Miles for new card holders. The earn rate is 1 Emirates Skywards Mile per dollar for the first $3000 spent each statement, with this falling to 0.5 miles after. The card has a $149 annual fee in its first year with it jumping up to $299 in subsequent years.
The American Express Explorer Credit Card and Platinum Edge are also great options for those looking to accrue Emirates Skywards Miles.
Major hotel chains
Many of the big hotel chains allow points to be converted into Emirates Skywards Miles. This includes Hilton, Starwood Preferred Guest, Marriott, Accor, IHG, Shangri-La and Crown. The conversion rate varies by reward currency.
The benefit of booking directly with your hotel chain and earning points this way is that you will also accrue status with the hotel chain.
Booking portal Rocketmiles offers the ability to earn Emirates Skywards Miles on hotel bookings. As with all points portals, it's worth comparing the final price with other booking sites to ensure you're not paying a significant tax to earn the points, otherwise it erodes the value. Unfortunately PointsHound, Kaligo and Agoda do not offer Emirates earning opportunities.
The Emirates website shows a list of car rental companies that offer the ability to earn Skywards Miles. This includes Avis, Budget and Europcar.
In addition, a small list of retailers is available on the Emirates website that offer miles earning opportunities, but it's unlikely many of them will be of benefit to most Australian frequent flyers.
Happy Emirates Skywards Miles collecting!
